Why Abyss X Zero Is The Indie Game Everyone’s Talking About

I love when indie developers continue to refine their craft following a successful release. In this case, we’re diving into Abyss X Zero , the highly anticipated next project from Studio Pixel Punk, the creators of the memorable Metroidvania-Zelda-inspired Unsighted . Since its reveal, I’ve been eager to highlight this game for our audience.
Every update I see of Abyss X Zero only heightens my excitement, leaving me longing to try even a brief demo. While we wait, I couldn’t resist sharing what makes this 3D Metroidvania so special. Let’s explore why Abyss X Zero deserves not only a spot on your Steam Wishlist but also your attention as one of the most exciting indie games in development today. Why Studio Pixel Punk Transitioned from 2D to 3D for Abyss X Zero
To help shed some light on the project, we connected with Abyss X Zero co-creator Tiani Pixel to discuss the studio’s creative process, including their move to 3D and the decision to create a new IP instead of a sequel. Tiani shared:
‘UNSIGHTED already featured a sort of fake 3D physics system because we always loved the verticality and platforming it provides, combined with puzzle and dungeon crawling. However, we always felt very limited by the 2D visuals and camera. So we decided very early on that our next game would be in 3D so we could realize all the ideas we couldn’t in UNSIGHTED.’
This bold transition allows Studio Pixel Punk to fully realize gameplay concepts that were previously constrained, offering players a more immersive and dynamic experience.

The excitement surrounding Abyss X Zero is undeniable, with over 500k views on YouTube trailers and more than 100k wishlists on Steam. However, the studio faces a critical decision: self-publish or partner with a publisher?
‘We’ve been talking to a lot of publishers, but recently there have been so many cases of publishers closing down or bad business practices going around that we’re highly considering self-publishing this time. Self-publishing is a big risk, though, so we can’t confirm anything yet,’ Tiani shared.
This cautious approach underscores their commitment to creative control and ensuring the game’s integrity isn’t compromised. While self-publishing offers independence, it also brings challenges in marketing and event outreach that publishers typically handle. Studio Pixel Punk’s Mission: More Than Just Gaming
Beyond making games, Studio Pixel Punk aims to leave a lasting impact on players. When asked about their goals, Tiani shared:
‘We hope to create games that can make people think and reevaluate their views on life. I believe games are a special form of art that lets you feel how it is to be in the shoes of someone different from you.’
This thoughtful approach to storytelling, combined with engaging gameplay, is why fans are rallying around Abyss X Zero . Regular updates and a transparent development process have further strengthened trust between the studio and its growing community. Why Gamers Are Talking About Abyss X Zero
