Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have joined an ‘unprecedented coalition’ of global leaders, scientists, and policymakers calling for a temporary halt to the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems. The move follows growing concern from experts who warn that AI superintelligence could become uncontrollable without proper safeguards.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their participation through their Archewell Foundation, releasing a statement emphasizing the importance of safety and ethical oversight in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
‘Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were asked to join an unprecedented coalition of world-renowned leaders, including AI scientists, experts, policy makers, and researchers in calling for a prohibition on the development of AI superintelligence until the technology is reliably safe and controllable and has public buy-in,’ the statement read.

Described as the first initiative of its kind, the coalition includes a wide range of voices across political and scientific communities worldwide. According to the statement, the group’s diverse and international membership reflects the growing consensus that the unchecked advancement of artificial intelligence poses a potential risk to humanity.
Superintelligence is defined as artificial intelligence capable of outperforming humans in nearly all cognitive tasks. Leading AI experts now estimate that such technology could be less than a decade away. However, they also warn that ‘we do not know how to control superintelligence were it to be created.’
‘While innovation in AI offers incredible potential for progress, rushing toward superintelligence without safeguards could have unthinkable consequences for humanity,’ the Archewell statement continued.
The Sussexes’ involvement highlights their ongoing advocacy for responsible technology use and digital safety. Over the past several years, Harry and Meghan have spoken out about the dangers of online misinformation, social media exploitation, and the mental health impacts of digital platforms. This new partnership marks an expansion of their efforts into the field of artificial intelligence governance.

As parents of two young children, the couple has frequently tied their advocacy work to creating a safer online and technological environment for future generations. Joining the coalition underscores that commitment and aligns them with a growing global movement urging caution as AI capabilities accelerate.
The call for a development pause reflects an increasing urgency within the scientific community and beyond, as governments and industry leaders race to define ethical and regulatory boundaries for the technology shaping the future of human life.
